Chase County sweeps Don Stine Invite titles

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. -- Chase County was a class above the competition at Monday’s Don Stine Invitational in Cambridge.

The Longhorns won both the boys and girls team titles by comfortable margins, thanks to strong performances across the board. In total, Chase County won 17 events (10 boys, 7 girls).

Girls recap

Chase County scored 155 points to win the girls team title over runner-up Cambridge, which had 92.

The Lady Longhorns were led by sophomores Mallie McNair and Sophie Spady. The duo was part of Chase County’s winning 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams and each girl won an individual event as well. McNair was first in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:01.18, while Spady was first in the 800-meter run with a season-best 2:34.76.

Adelaide Maxwell, who was also part of that winning 4x400 relay squad, won the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.29 seconds. Peyton Fiedler placed first in the 100-meter hurdles, while Allison Owings won shot put with a throw of 38-02.5.

Korynn Clason led runner-up Cambridge by winning two of the Lady Trojans’ three gold medals. Clason won the 200-meter dash in 28.11 seconds and the long jump with a season-best mark of 16-03. Rylee Cross won the triple jump with a mark of 31-09.75 to claim Cambridge’s only other gold medal.

Third-place Dundy County-Stratton also had three gold medals in the girls’ competition. Cross country star Sable Lambley won the one-mile run with a personal best time of 5:53.92, while Dawson Latta won the 300-meter hurdles with a PR of 50.22 seconds. Sophomore Sydney Reichert won the third gold medal with a jump of 9-0 in pole vault.

McCook, which was mostly made up of reserve players, placed fourth. The Lady Bison’s ElsiAnna Rodewald won the two-mile run with a season-best time of 13:25.65 for McCook’s only gold medal. Freshman Jorlynn Chauncy had the Lady Bison’s lone silver medal with her PR run of 2:40.67 in the 800-meter run.

Rounding out the top five teams was Wauneta-Palisade. The Lady Broncos’ Faith Simpson placed first in the discus (124-05) and high jump (5-0), while also getting second in shot put (36-05.75) and third in the 100-meter dash (17.48).

Other area teams in the girls’ competition were sixth-place Southwest, seventh-place Southern Valley and eighth-place Arapahoe.

Boys recap

Chase County’s quality and depth showed in the boys’ competition, as the Longhorns won 10 events. That added up to 173 points, nearly 100 more than second-place DCS’ 79.

The Longhorns swept the three relays with winning times of 45.19 seconds in the 4x100, 3:35.61 in the 4x400 and 8:45.76 in the 4x800. Two other sweeps occurred in the discus and shot put, as the trio of Jack Bauerle, Eli Hinojosa and Evan Fisher went 1-2-3 in both events.

Cross Country specialist Will Kuenne won both long distance runs with times of 4:51.00 in the one-mile and 10:57.85 in the two-mile. Freshman Chase Rowley added a gold medal by winning the 100-meter (11.61 seconds), while Francisco Barrientos won the 400-meter with a time of 53.19. Logan Jussel’s personal-best time of 44.28 seconds won the 300-meter hurdles.

Second-place DCS was led by Phalen Sanford, who won two gold medals and two silver medals. He placed first in the 200-meter dash (22.65 seconds) and 110-meter hurdles (15.31 seconds) for the Tigers’ lone gold medals. Second-place performances came in the long jump (20-09) and 4x400 relay (3:35.95) with teammates Wyatt Lemon, Cade Lutz and Serbando Diaz.

Third-place Southwest was led by Derek Greenlee, who won three events. He had personal best marks in the high jump (6-02) and long jump (21-05.25) and also had a season-best mark of 42-08.5 in the triple jump. Kaden Guerrero won a fourth gold medal for the Roughriders by winning the pole vault with a PR of 13-0.

Fourth-place Arapahoe didn’t win gold in any event, but had a number of top finishers. Yordi Gutierrez was runner-up in the 800-meter run, while Noah Koller (400-meter run) and Spencer Watson (triple jump) won bronze in their events. Other third-place finishes came from the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

Host Cambridge rounded out the top five. The Trojans best performances came from the 4x800 relay team and Kyle Eubanks, who took bronze in the long jump with a mark of 19-10.25.

Other area teams included Wauneta-Palisade finishing sixth, McCook finishing seventh and Southern Valley finishing ninth.
