First Central Bank ends season with one-run losses
COZAD, Neb. -- A pair of one-run losses over the weekend saw McCook First Central Bank’s season come crashing to an end in the Nebraska American Legion B6 Area Tournament.
With an 0-2 weekend, First Central Bank’s season ends with an 11-13 league record.
In a wide-open B6 bracket, the McCook sluggers came close to victory both days. Cozad took Friday’s game 10-9, while Gothenburg ended First Central Bank’s season with a 6-5 win Saturday.
Friday saw No. 4 First Central Bank jump out to a 7-3 lead against No. 3 Cozad after their half of the fourth inning.
The B6 Area Tournament hosts, however, responded with three runs to bring the score back to 7-6.
First Central Bank added two more runs in the fifth before Cozad put together a big sixth inning performance. Cozad plated four runs to take a 10-9 lead and eventually hung on for the opening-day victory.
Seth Dugger led First Central Bank Friday with three hits and three RBIs.
As a team, First Central Bank outhit Cozad 12-5.
On the mound, James Mockry pitched 3 1/3 innings and had a game-high four strikeouts.
On Saturday, First Central Bank, again, came up on the wrong side of a tight contest.
First Central Bank jumped out to leads of 4-0 and 5-1 before the No. 1 Gothenburg Melons began their comeback.
Two runs in the fourth inning, another in the fifth and two more in the sixth gave Gothenburg a 6-5 lead, its first of the game, heading into the seventh, and decisive, inning.
Needing one run to force extra innings, the First Central Bank bats were unable to score for the fourth-straight inning and ended the game with its second tough loss in as many days.
Morgan Fawver brought in three runs on two hits to lead the First Central Bank offense.
Starting pitcher Seth Dugger pitched a strong five innings, but suffered the loss on the mound.
As a team, First Central Bank outhit Gothenburg 8-7, but also committed five errors in the loss.
No. 2 Aurora currently leads the B6 Area Tournament with a 3-0 record.

Imperial still alive in C7
ALMA, Neb. -- Imperial bounced back from an opening-round loss to win two elimination games in the Nebraska American Legion C7 Area Tournament in Alma.
After suffering a 12-5 defeat to No. 5 Shelton-Gibbon on Friday, No. 4 Imperial took down No. 1 BerMis (Bertrand-Loomis) 23-11 in Saturday's elimination game.
On Sunday the Horns took another elimination game, defeating No. 3 Bridgeport 14-4.
Imperial moves on to face No. 2 Overton, the only unbeaten team in the C7 bracket. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m.
No. 7 Curtis-Maywood went 0-2 on the weekend, suffering defeats to Overton (14-2 score) Friday and No. 6 Kimball (11-7) Saturday.
In Monday's other game, No. 8 Alma and Shelton-Gibbon face off in an elimination game at 5 p.m.
