Trojan wins district, Eagles qualify for state

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. — Cambridge sophomore Preston Carbaugh shot 74 to win a fabulous four-golfer race for the C-5 district championship Tuesday afternoon.

The top 10 individuals and three teams advance into next week’s Class C state tourney at Kearney’s Meadowlark Golf Course.

Carbaugh needed every clutch shot on his home Cross Creek Links course. He prevailed by only one stroke over three top contenders who proved western Nebraska boys can play great golf.

Bridgeport’s Eric Stevens, Joshua Johnston from Perkins County and Kimball’s Jordan Greenwood all fired rounds of 75.

No other Trojan reached the top 10 as Cambridge only placed eighth overall among 15 teams with a 404.

RPAC champion Southern Valley did earn the third C-5 team spot at state.

Senior Trent Krejdl and junior Ryder Lewis (81) both carded 81s to crack the top 10.

Junior RPAC individual champ Spencer Brown was only two strokes off their pace at 83, and junior Riley Mustin’s 94 completed the Eagles’ state ticket-clinching 339 team score.

Junior Chaston Burgeson (108) joins the Eagle team traveling to Kearney next week. Class C state tourney play is set for Tuesday and Wednesday.

No other district results for area golfers were obtained before today’s deadline. C-5 team scores from Tuesday: 1. Kimball 315, 2. Perkins County 331, 3. Southern Valley 339, 4. Valentine 352, 5. Bridgeport 372, 6. North Platte St. Patrick’s 385, 7. Mitchell 386, 8. Cambridge 404, 9. Gordon-Rushville 409, 10. Sutherland 421. Southwest placed 12th with 442 and Chase County did not record ateam score.

The individual top 10 state qualifiers: 1. Carbaugh, CAM, 74; 2. Stevens, BRID, 75; 3. Johnston, PC, 75; 4. Greenwood, KIM, 75; 5. Dillon Wise, KIM, 78; 6. Jake Jones, NPSP, 79; 7. Zane Anthony, KIM, 79; 8. Tyson Patrick, PC, 81; 9. Krejdl, SV, 81; 10. Lewis, SV, 81.
