BROKEN BOW, Neb. — A group of McCook JV golfers showed they could compete with varsity during Friday’s Southwest Conference tournament.

Tanner Unger even earned a league medal, firing 92 to finish 15th overall.

McCook placed seventh overall (392) even though most of the top varsity players competed at Saturday’s GNAC invite.

Billy Bennett carded McCook’s next best score of 99. Joel Gray fired an even 100 and Ethan Hays finished at 101.

“It was nice to see Tanner score well and get a medal with a 15th place finish,” coach Rick Haney remarked. “This tournament was nice to get some of our younger players into a competition.”

The Bison outgolfed Ainsworth (449) and finished only three strokes behind Gothenburg.

Host Broken Bow took the SWC team title (348) by 20 strokes over Ogallala (368).

Cozad (369), Valentine (378) and Minden (379) completed the top five.

As mentioned in Monday’s Gazette, Kade Gray fired an excellent round of 79 to earn eighth among GNAC golfers at Norfolk.

Haney offered these comments:

“Kade Gray had a very nice outing and his effort earned him an eighth place finish in a very tough field of players. His 79 was a tremendous effort on a very difficult course. It was really nice to see him score very well and his play is really coming around towards the end of this season. He is a senior who is really showing his maturity on the golf course.”

Trevor Oberg had another steady day by carding an 89. He is on to watch as we compete toward the end of this season.

Hunter Hays scored a personal best at this difficult meet by carding a 92 which is a very respectable score in this field.”

The Bison are scheduled to compete next at Thursday’s Ogallala Invitational with district play set for Monday.
