McCOOK, Neb. — Margie Marie (Smalberger) Welsh passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at Good Samaritan Home in Oberlin, Kans., at the age of 92.

Margie was born Aug. 5, 1924, in Red Willow County near Marion, Neb., to Simon “Glenn” and Rethal “Arvilla” (Sines) Smalberger. She attended a country school in Decatur County, Kan., and graduated from Decatur Community High School in Oberlin in 1942.

After receiving her normal training certificate, she taught four years in a country school in Decatur County.

On July 24, 1946, she was united in marriage to Loren D. Welsh in Oberlin. They lived on a farm north of Oberlin for two and half years, until they moved to a farm in Red Willow County near Danbury, Neb., in December of 1949. They lived there 52 years and moved to McCook in December of 2001.

She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary No. 276 in Danbury and Beaver Valley Veterans of Foreign War No. 7719 in Lebanon, Neb.

She attended the Presbyterian Church in Danbury until she moved to McCook and became a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in 2012.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed embroidering, sewing, playing cards, word search puzzles, and watching her favorite sports team on TV. She made a quilt for each of her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Glenn and Arvilla Smalberger; her husband, Loren Welsh in 2001; four sisters, Beulah Lawver, Oretha Smalberger, Donna Lee Smalberger and Ella Mae Wahrman; five brothers, Lloyd, Rex, Harold, Darl, and Maynard Smalberger; and great-granddaughter, Sierra Schermerhorn.

Survivors include her two daughters, Janice (Dennis) Kisker of McCook and Donna (Gary) Barth of Culbertson; son, Leon (Susan) Welsh of Kearney; five grandchildren, Marshall Barth, Kurt (Linnette) Kisker, Danielle (Tony) Schermerhorn, Brandon (Chandra) Kisker, and Jonathan (Abby) Barth; four step-grandchildren, Veronica, Glenn, Haley and Courtney; 10 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Melvin Smalberger of Oberlin and Richard Smalberger of Beaverton, Ore.; one sister-in-law, Nadene Lafferty of McCook; brother-in-law, Bill Wahrman of Strasburg, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends and family.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Visitation will be Sunday, April 23, 2017, at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook from 4 to 7 p.m., with family present to greet friends. Friends may send condolences to the family at www.herrmannfh.com

Funeral services will be Monday, April 24, 2017, 10:30 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastor Alisa Parde and Pastor Jeff Kelly officiating. Burial will follow at Sherman Cemetery, rural Danbury.
