FREMONT, Neb. — Carl W. Campbell, 92 years, of Fremont, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at Pathfinder Place in Fremont.

Carl was born on a farm near Wallace, Neb., on Jan. 26, 1925, to Neal and Bernice (Kolbet) Campbell. He graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1943. He entered the U.S. Navy on Sept. 15, 1944, until being honorably discharged on Feb. 23, 1946, and served in the 146th Naval Construction Battalion (Sea Bees) on Okinawa Island in the Pacific during World War II.

Carl married Opal E. Verbeck on March 20, 1945, at McCook, Neb. She preceded him in death on May 7, 2012. Carl worked for Frontier County, the State of Nebraska and Lincoln County respectively from 1947 until August 1968, operating a road grader, constructing, grading and repairing roads. Carl and Opal moved to Kearney, Neb. in August of 1968, where he worked as a type setter in the classified department for the Kearney Hub newspaper until February of 1987. He and Opal moved to Fremont in 1990.

He is survived by a son, Bill and wife, Jo Ann Campbell of Fremont; daughter, Wanda C. Sydow of Kingwood, Texas; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Opal; brother, Cornelius “Pete” Campbell; and sister, Maxine; and son-in-law, Ralph Sydow.

A memorial Mass will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at the Chapel at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont. The Rev. Father Ron Battiato will officiate. There will be no visitation. Burial with Military Honors will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell, Neb., at a later date.
