Bison boys fight off Bulldogs

Steve Towery/McCook Gazdtte McCook junior Hunter Potthoff fired up 19 points over the Alliance Bulldogs during Saturday's East-West Shootout finale at McCook High School. However, a scoreless first quarter hurt the Bison victory chances as Alliance took home its third straight road win.

McCOOK, Neb. -- A team boasting plenty of Class B playoff power points couldn't match the McCook Bison boys Friday night.

When senior Kyle Geisler powered past the Gering Bulldogs to score and make it 6-4, McCook never trailed again en route to a 62-58 East-West Shootout home victory.

"They are a very good team. They've been in the top 10 in power points," McCook coach Jeremy Yilk said abouit his team's quick recovery from a 19-pont loss to Class B powerhouse Scottsbluff on Saturday. "It's a quality win for us."

Especially since the Bulldogs (13-9) really never stopped trying to steal a comeback win.

McCook's 17-7 lead through one quarter often got sliced to four or even three points.

Yet McCook always had an answer whether it was Geisler (14 points), juniors Hunter Potthoff (18), Zach Schlager (nine) or even reserves like Hunter Hays (one).

"Hunter's a big body in there and I think that curly hair kind of scares them (opponents) a bit," Geisler said.

"The shots were falling tonight and we were able to hit some free throws," he added. "There was a little pressure late, but we were able to hit them."

Junior Clayton Stevens continued his great late-season play with one final free throw.

The Bulldogs were only trailing 61-58 and missed one tying shot.

Senior Easton Gillen continued his tradition of having a nose for the ball, grabbing one final rebound and getting it to junior Clayton Stevens.

Stevens canned one final free throw which sealed the four-point Bison win.

McCook raised its record to 8-11 before falling 49-36 against Alliance in the Shootout finale on Saturday.

Friday's Bison scoring summary: Hunter Potthoff 18 points, Kyle Geisler 14, Zach Schlager 9, Clayton Stevens 8, Easton Gillen 5, Gabe Sehnert 5, DJ Gross 2, Hunter Hays 1.
