McCOOK, Neb. -- Wayne L. Michaelis, age 76, of McCook, passed away at Community Hospital in McCook on Friday, July 22, 2016. He was born in Springfield, Ill., on Aug. 22, 1939, to Clarence J. "CJ" and Hazel (Jones) Michaelis. The family moved to Nebraska, where Wayne graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in 1957. He continued his education at Fairbury College, graduating in 1959.

On May 23, 1959, he was united in marriage to Wanda Liska in Lincoln. Wayne worked with his father in construction until 1968, when he joined the Nebraska State Patrol. Wayne was first stationed in Lexington, Neb., after his graduation from Patrol Camp. He and Wanda lived in Lexington until 1973, when he was transferred to McCook as a criminal and drug investigator. Wayne retired after 16 years of service with the Nebraska State Patrol.

Wayne was a Red Willow County Commissioner for six years. Wayne joined the Methodist Church in Lincoln on Nov. 15, 1959, and was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook. He served on many committees in the community. He was the Past Exalted Ruler of the McCook Elks Lodge 1434. Wayne continued his construction work, building many houses and shingling. Wayne enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother; LeRoy; his in-laws, A.J. and Lockie Liska.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Wanda of McCook; sons, David of McCook, Jay of Kansas City, Mo., and daughter, Brenda and husband, Matt Nebgen of Gilbert, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, Kori Michaelis, Kyle Michaelis, Dillon and Danae Michaelis, Drew and Hailey Nebgen, Jordan Shockley and husband, Marcus and Madison Michaelis; and two great-grandchildren, Myah and Benton Shockley.

Memorial Services will be at Memorial United Methodist Church on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at 10 a.m. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorials may be left in Wayne's name to the Community Hospital of McCook. Friends may leave on-line condolences or sign the guest book at herrmannfh.com.
