McCOOK, Neb. -- The McCook Police Department has joined other law enforcement agencies in urging caution when playing Pokemon Go.

As the smartphone app becomes more common, so do reports of injuries and violations of law resulting from unscrupulous gameplay, according to an MPD release.

Drivers are reminded that their primary responsibility when operating a motor vehicle is to drive in a safe, legal and responsible manner, according to the release.

Nebraska law prohibits careless driving as well as certain uses of handheld wireless communication devices.

Pedestrians, bicyclists and skateboarders are reminded of the need to remain aware of their surroundings and to avoid traffic and environmental hazards.

Consider wearing light-colored or reflective clothing at night for better visibility to drivers, the MPD said.

Parents and young teenagers are reminded that a city curfew remains in effect for those under 17 years of age, between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday nights, and between 12:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, when minors are not accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and are not on an emergency errand or legitimate business directed by their parent or legal guardian.

All are reminded that city parks and cemeteries are closed between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. except for Karrer Park, which is open 24 hours for camping.

Please respect the property and peace and quiet of others. "By all means, get out there and 'Catch 'em all!'' the release concluded. "The McCook Police Department simply asks that you do so safely and legally."
