Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts, left, congratulates Lonnie Karre of Lincoln after Karre was presented with his Bronze Star during a surprise ceremony hosted by Cabela's in Lincoln, where Lonnie is employed. Karre served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and received a commendation for the Bronze Star award, but did not receive the star. After he mentioned the situation to a fellow veteran, the veteran arranged for Karre to receive the Bronze Star. Those attending the ceremony June 30 in Lincoln included Gov. Ricketts; Brig. Gen. Richard Dahlman, assistant adjutant general of the Nebraska Army National Guard; and Thomas L. Millner, CEO of Cabela's. The Bronze Star is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces for heroic or meritorious achievement or service in a combat zone. Karre is a 1965 graduate of Hayes Center High School, and is the son of the late William and LaVerne Karre. His sister is Kathy Mabile of McCook; his brother, Gordon, lives in Arizona.
