McCOOK, Neb. -- Velda Hartman, age 89, of McCook, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2016, at Community Hospital in McCook.

Velda was born March 17, 1927, to Herman and Pearl (Smith) Gerdes on the family farm south of Max, Neb. in Dundy County. Velda attended country schools in both Dundy County in Nebraska and Rawlins County in Kansas.

Velda married Wilbur Hartman on Aug. 17, 1949, in Atwood, Kan. Two daughters were born to this union, Cheryl Diane and Patricia Ann. She worked at Hillcrest Nursing Home and later, the Senior Center in McCook.

Velda enjoyed bowling when she was younger, cooking and playing cards. She loved all animals and especially adored her cats. After her retirement, she looked forward to visiting with her many friends over coffee. Eating lunch at Mac's and playing Friday bingo at Brookdale were two of her favorite activities. Velda was a past member of the Eastern Star.

Preceding Velda in death were her parents, Herman and Pearl Gerdes; seven brothers, Everett, Lyle, Lee, Archie, Rex, Freddie and Leroy Gerdes; three sisters, Opal Amsberry, Ethel Dubbert and Lenamae Sloan; and son-in-law, Keith Moreland.

Left to mourn her passing are Velda's daughters, Cheryl Moreland of McCook and Pat (Frank) Stehno of Stratton, Neb.; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside memorial services will be on Friday, May 27, 2016, at 3 p.m. (CST), 2 p.m.(MT), at the Benkelman Cemetery in Benkelman with Pastor Alisa Parde officiating.
