Rainfall helps firefighters quash salvage yard fire
INDIANOLA, Neb. -- Indianola, Nebraska, and Red Willow Western firefighters were thankful that the rain fell when it did late Wednesday evening, after fighting a fire in a salvage yard bordered by a stubble field on the north.
Indianola Fire Chief Tom Davidson reported this morning that salvage yard owner Donnie Schamel said he was using a cutting torch when scrap in a nearby pile caught on fire about 9 p.m. Schamel's yard is located between Indianola and McCook, at County Drive 392 and Road 719, north of Timmerman's feedlots which is located on Highway 6&34.
Davidson said he called for help with water from the Red Willow Western Rural Fire Department "because we were pouring a lot of water on that fire."
Davidson said the rain kept the fire from possibly spreading into a stubble field on the north.
