College back in session work starts on Brooks Hall

McCOOK, Neb. -- College is back in session, students are back on campus and work is scheduled to begin this week for the $2.082 million addition to Brooks Hall on the McCook Community College campus.

Cheever Construction of Lincoln, Nebraska, is on site for the project which includes an elevator and addition to the cafeteria. The project is expected to be completed by the end of July. The upgrade will also include $215,117 of upgrades for kitchen equipment in the Brooks Hall Cafeteria.

The McCook Community College Mens and Women's basketball teams have already returned to the Peter and Dolores Graff Event Center Court over the weekend with both teams in action Friday and Saturday.

The MCC Women are 12-7 with a break in the schedule until Jan. 23 at Otero, Colorado. The Lady Indians are home Jan. 28 against North Platte.

The MCC Men are 12-5 and return to action Tuesday in Goodland before returning home Saturday at 4 p.m.

This week the Event Center will host high school basketball as Chase County and Southern Valley square off in games Tuesday. Junior varsity girls play at 3 p.m., JV boys play at 4:30, varsity girls square off at 6 and the varsity boys start at 7:30 p.m.

On Jan. 24 the Event Center hosts the McCook Optimist Mac Attack Youth Basketball Tournament.

Key basketball dates this semester include McCook hosting North Platte CC in men's and women's action Jan. 28 which will be YMCA night. AmFirst Bank/PBL night and Sports Shoppe Night. The women's game starts at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow.

Jan. 31 is designated as Vice President's Day with men's and women's matinee games against Central CC-Columbus starting at 1 p.m. Spotlight Studio dancers will perform at halftime of the men's game.

The Dick Driml chili cook-off is set for Saturday, Feb. 7

The Wrightstone Fine Arts Gallery schedule this semester will kick off with an exhibition from the Museum of Nebraska Art Jan. 19-Feb. 6. "MONA Highlight Show" is a hand-picked collection by the development director of MONA's permanent work vault. This exhibit will represent all types and genres of work.

The gallery will also host a showing of McCook high school artists, the annual area-wide high-school paint-in exhibition and competition and the portfolio showing of MCC Graphic Design and Visual Communication students at the end of the semester.

The MCC Music Department under the direction of Tiffany Gapp is holding auditions for all MCC's vocal select choir Thursday from 1-2:15 p.m. in the choir room (room 104) in Tipton Hall. Students need to come prepared to sing one selection with accompaniment or acappella. Concerts and recitals featuring MCC vocal and instrumental students will be announced later this semester.

Spring Break at MCC is set for March 23 -- 27.

MCC's annual Inter-High day academic competition is set for Wednesday, March 18, from 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Final exams are set for May 4-7 with Commencement on May 8.
