Appreciation dinner planned for National Legion commander

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Reservations for an "All-Nebraska Appreciation Event" for the new national commander of the 2.4-million member American Legion must be made by Monday, Aug. 25.

Michael D. Helm, born in McCook, Nebraska, and raised in the Norcatur area of Kansas, will be installed as American Legion national commander on Thursday, Aug. 28. "Team Nebraska" -- members of the Nebraska American Legion -- plan an appreciation dinner for Helm on Saturday, Sept. 6, in Kearney.

The social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m., at the Younes Conference Center at Interstate 80 and Second Avenue. Tickets cost $25 per person; the menu will feature a Windsor Loin dinner, salad, vegetable, bread, beverage and dessert.

Helm is a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam War with the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, N.C. He has been a member of Jack Helt American Legion Post. No. 313 in Lebanon since 1972.

He is a retired U.S. Postal Service rural mail carrier, and a resident of the Norcatur area.
