Danbury Auxiliary discuss June convention

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

DANBURY, Nebraska -- The American Auxiliary Unit 276 of Danbury met July 11, 2012, at the home of Wanda Miller. President Patsy Redfern opened and closed the 2 p.m. meeting in form. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved, and a treasurer's report was given and bills allowed. Drawing for the "Grandmother's Garden" afghan will be at the August meeting.

A remittance for membership dues was taken to department convention in June by Karen Hodson, who served as a page and was installed as President of District Nine. She reported that JoAnne Ward of Palisade had been elected vice president for the Department of Nebraska, that Girls and Boys State was being restructured, that the auxiliary newspaper would be combined with the Legion newspaper; and that the 2013 ABC Book would be available in October. The veteran's hospital at Hot Springs, South Dakota, and the special needs of veterans with post-traumatic syndrome was discussed.

The Grand Island Hospital accepted the donation of crocheted scarves made by Janice Kisker, and would appreciate crocheted booties for the patients. The unit received two citations: a Standard Rating of merit, and a "Rolling Forward with the American Legion Auxiliary and Family" for reaching or exceeding 2012 membership goal 30 days prior to Department Convention.

Replies were received from Senator Adrian and Mike Johanns concerning member's letters that urged protection for medical care of veterans and their families. The introductory July newsletter of the district president, Karen Hodson, stressed planning unit programs, keeping records of home and field service, membership, sending newsletters to members, convention news, and suggesting topics to her for future newsletters.

Several members attended the Girls and Boys State Program hosted by the Bartley unit on July 9. Reports were given by Kimberly Lord, sponsored by Indianola Unit 344, Cassa McConville, sponsored by Bartley Unit 245, and Kate Kelley, who was co-sponsored by Danbury Unit 276 and Lebanon Unit 313. Oliver Kragelund, sponsored by Legion Post 245 of Bartley, reported on Boys State and the Junior Law Cadet program.

The next meeting will be August 8, 2 p.m. with Vera Cumming, Room 303, at Willow Ridge.
