OBERLIN, Kansas -- The McCook Bison prep wrestling team got off to an uncharacteristic slow start Tuesday, Jan. 4, in a triangular meet with two Kansas opponents.

The Bison dropped their opening contest to Phillipsburg, Kansas, 51-20, before finding a higher gear and winning their first dual meet of the season with a 40-33 victory over host Decatur Community of Oberlin.

McCook head coach Nick Umscheid wasn't sure why his team had the slow start.

"For one reason or another we just came out really flat against Phillipsburg," Umscheid said. "I don't know if it was because we were out of routine with no school -- we just look real sluggish in that first dual. We looked like the blood wasn't flowing yet. We were getting caught on our heels and things like that.

"It was kind of frustrating because that was uncharacteristic of our team. We're usually a team that comes out and we're very aggressive right at the start and usually keep it going through the match and that's how we win a lot of our matches. We were getting caught on our feet, getting taken down early. We were just fighting to battle back the whole meet.

"We've just got to learn from that. I talked to the kids (Wednesday) about the mistakes that we made last night and how we've just got to correct those in the next three days, because it doesn't get any easier at the Norton tournament."

McCook returns to Kansas Saturday, Jan. 8, to compete in the tough Norton Invitational. Umscheid thinks his team will come back strong after Tuesday's slow start.

"This is a group of kids that will bounce back and respond to that," he said. "We had an excellent practice (Wednesday), that tells me that the kids want to do better, that they're hungry. Hopefully the results will show on Saturday."

In Tuesday's second meet against the host Red Devils, Umscheid said his team looked better, but he knows the Bison have a ways to go to hit their peak.

"We match up pretty well with Oberlin," Umscheid said. "We were just fortunate enough to come out with a victory. We did wrestle a little bit better than we did in the Phillipsburg dual, but we were still far away from our best. I told the kids even though we won that dual and we won a few more matches, we can still learn from our mistakes in that dual."

Three Bison won both of their matches Tuesday, including Jesus Gauna (112 pounds), Keldon Osterman (140) and Skyler Kalinski (145).

Return to Kansas Saturday

First-round matches at Norton Saturday are slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. Coach Umscheid said the meet is perhaps one of the toughest on the Bison regular-season schedule. He compared the meet to the Lexington Invite that McCook will compete at Jan. 22.

"There's not as many teams (as Lex)," Umscheid said, "but looking at the rankings in Kansas, with our team and Cozad being there and (Cozad) has a very solid team this year, it's like an all-star tournament. There's at least two or three ranked guys in every weight class. I'm sure that there's plenty of state qualifiers, state medalists, state champions.

"It gets intense down there. It's a good physical style of wrestling down there. They get after it. It's a good test for us. It kind of toughens our guys up and gets them ready for the end of the season."
