Chief urges caution on use of fireworks

Monday, June 28, 2010

Dear Editor,

The McCook Fire Department is encouraging firework users to be careful and safe this Fourth of July Holiday. The sale of fireworks begins today through July 4 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The designated times to discharge fireworks is June 23 to July 3 from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on July 4 from 8 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.

Here are some firework safety tips to consider when using fireworks this year:

* Always read and follow label directions

* Have an adult present

* Buy from reliable sellers

* Use outdoors only

* Always have water handy (a garden hose and a bucket)

* Never experiment or make your own fireworks

* Light only one firework at a time

* Never re-light a "dud" firework (wait 15 to 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water)

* Never give fireworks to small children

* If necessary, store fireworks in a cool, dry place

* Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water and then disposing of them in a metal trash container

* Never throw or point fireworks at other people

* Never carry fireworks in your pocket

* Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers

* The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any part of the body over the firework

* Stay away from illegal explosives

By following these general rules and using common sense people will be able to enjoy a safe and happy Fourth of July. Some of the most important safety rules to follow are having adult supervision when lighting fireworks and having a source of extinguishment nearby such as a bucket of water or a garden hose.

If you have any further questions or comments about firework safety feel free to contact the McCook Fire Department at (308) 345-5710
