Letter to the Editor

Urged to attend

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Dear Editor,

I am considering telling my grandchildren not to struggle getting an education. All they need to do is get elected to public office.

Immediately following election they will be smarter than the public and can totally ignore public opinion, adopting the firm belief that no non-government individual has any good ideas.

If they ever want to verify their wisdom, they can hire a "yes-man" expert to affirm their position. (An expert is someone with a briefcase whose office is more than 50 miles away.)

I've lost count of the thousands of dollars the city has spent on experts to justify their wrong decision on new municipal buildings, especially as it relates to West Ward.

I suggest they hire an expert to teach them how to "whistle dixie" ... they'll need to know that if they think McCookites will approve going into debt 6 to 7 million dollars realizing 4 million for a jail is coming down the pike. Debts that will require more and more taxes.

A national poll this week showed only 22 percent of Americans trust government and 58 percent think government spending is our biggest threat. Last time I checked, McCook was still in America and I feel local sentiment is pretty close to national trends.

Is there ever a point where government officials feel a pang of guilt about the amount of hard earned dollars they suck out of Sam and Sue Public?

To be objective, I feel sometimes you need to stand in the opposition's shoes, in addition. a guy needs to have a little fun, every now and then. I looked at West Ward, then I looked at the White House, West Ward, White House ... a little cut and paste gave me a primitive illustration of what the east elevation of city offices could look like if re-habbed.

Then I took the site plan published months ago. Again some cut and paste, reduce the size of the fire house a little, relocate it and viola -- I had enough room for a jail! I would sink the jail into the hillside thereby making sure its east elevation didn't detract from city offices.

Enough of being in their shoes, now back into mine. I can't attend the Heritage Senior Center meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, but plead with those of you who can to attend and give the council your opinions. Tea Partiers welcome.

'Nuff said,

Bill Frasier,

McCook

  • Bill, I am sorry that ALL of the in town and out of town professionals disagree with your view that the city should "save" West Ward. At some point you may want to consider that the city is following the best advice available instead of shooting arrows. I to hope for a big turn-out at the town hall meeting. I believe the council really wants to hear from the citizens but I do not think they care to hear from hot heads and screaming masses, just rational calm view points. And it may suprise you to know that some of the council members probably hold some of the same views as the Tea Partiers. I believe the city wants to know if the public will support a new facility(ies). How much is too much? Bond against sales tax or property? Furthermore I believe the council has already said they will put the issue to a vote instead of just pluging ahead--which they could do without a vote. To me the city is doing exactly what they should. They have compiled various estimates, looked at multiple options, held public meetings and again is asking for public input and then will let the public vote. Your local public officials also live, work and pay taxes here. If dollars are "sucked" from taxpayers they too will feel the "sucking". They are in your shoes! Give them a break.
