Pinpoint warns of telephone scam

Thursday, January 14, 2010

CAMBRIDGE -- Pinpoint Communications, along with the Cambridge Telephone Co., is warning residents of Southwest Nebraska not to divulge personal information to callers offering refunds or credits on telephone bills.

Subscribers of Pinpoint and CTC have received calls purporting to be from their "Telephone Company" claiming that a telephone bill had been overcharged and that the subscriber would be receiving a refund. When pressed for details about the transaction, the caller hangs up.

Although the Nebraska Attorney General's office has no such cases under investigation, a representative of the Consumer Protection Division told Pinpoint that the calls follow a pattern associated with "Phishing," or an attempt to gather bank account numbers, social security numbers and other personal information.

Pinpoint and the Cambridge Telephone Co. adhere strictly to customer proprietary network information (CPNI) regulations and will never ask a subscriber to divulge personal information over the telephone.

Consumers who receive any suspicious calls are encouraged to call Pinpoint at 800-793-2788 or the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division at 800-727-6432.

Pinpoint Communications and the Cambridge Telephone Co. have been providing telecommunications services to Southwest Nebraska since 1918.
