Commercial solid waste fee hike trimmed by half

Thursday, September 10, 2009

Fees for commercial contractors unloading household waste at the McCook Transfer station are going up only half of what was originally proposed.

At the Aug. 17 meeting, the McCook City Council approved an ordinance concerning solid waste collection fees, with residential fees going up $1, from $17 to $18 per month and commercial fees increasing to $2.

The ordinance was up for second reading Tuesday night at the regular council meeting, but the increase in commercial fees will now be lowered to just $1.

City staff has found that due to extra tonnage being deposited at the Transfer Station from the Keystone renovation, revenues are projected to increase for the current year.

The new fees will go into effect October 1. City staff will review revenues again in January.

The council unanimously approved the revised solid waste collection fees, suspending the three reading rule.

This was done to give staff enough time to notify commercial haulers of the increase.
