WAUNETA -- Marion Clyde Long, 82, died Sunday (July 26, 2009), at Heritage of Wauneta Nursing Home.

He was born March 1, 1927, in Riverton, to Winifred Haskel and Hazel Edna (North) Long.

He entered the U.S. Navy on April 25, 1945, and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on May 18, 1946.

On Aug. 21, 1944, he married Alberta "Bertie" Marie Parde at St. Francis. They made their home in the Wauneta, Imperial and Grant communities where he farmed and was a mechanic for the Ford Garage in Wauneta.

In 1956, the family moved to Oregon where Marion and Bertie worked for an orchard farm. He later took training and began working for the Oregon Correctional Institute as a guard later becoming a Sergeant. He retired in 1983. They eventually moved back to Wauneta where he was living at the time of his death.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Jimmie Michael and Timothy J. Long; one daughter, Linda Lee Hawkins; one brother, Bud Long; and one sister, Shirley Long.

Survivors include his wife of almost 65 years, Bertie Long of Wauneta; one son, David Long of Salem, Ore.; one daughter, Diane Cummings of Big Springs; one brother, Irvin Long and wife, Thelma, of McCook; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Graveside funeral services will be 10 a.m., Friday at Riverside Cemetery in Wauneta with the Rev. Keith Wellman officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday, 2-6 p.m. at the Liewer Funeral Home in Wauneta.
