Although geese gliding by seemed oblivious, park visitors were eager to shower compliments on the new lighted fountains at Barnett Park.

"I like them," said three-year old Breanna Rath, who was climbing on the playground equipment nearby as her mother watched. "They're sparkly."

With jets of water bursting into the air, the four new lighted fountains at Barnett Park are easy to spot. Installed on Monday and Tuesday, they will help oxygenate the ponds for the fish as well as beautify the park.

The fountains will run continuously for the first two days, as recommended by the manufacturer. said Public Works Director Kyle Potthoff. After that, they will operate during regular park hours from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Five horsepower electric motors anchored to the bottom of the ponds power the pumps for the fountains.

Potthoff said the fountains are part of the city's effort to improve the parks.

"It's been on our wish list and we've always wanted to do this, but we didn't always have the funding," he said.

But money was allotted in the city budget this year for the fountains, the cost of $32,000 split between city sales tax revenue and general funds.

More improvements are planned for other city parks, Potthoff said, including new playground equipment and sidewalks at Norris Park.

McCook is fortunate to have the numbers of parks they do and the quality of them, Potthoff said.

  • Those are a welcome sight for the park. If the city could put up some lights to show off the park, it would be real good for everyone.

An example of using sales tax dollars for something good for the citizens.
