Changes in store for Bison girls basketball

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Barry Schaeffer will not be the varsity girls basketball coach at McCook High School next season.

"At this time we feel that McCook High School girls basketball needs to go in a different direction," said MHS athletic director Darin Nichols.

"After visiting with coach Schaeffer we have made a decision to open up the head girls basketball position for the 2009-2010 school year.

"We want to thank coach Schaeffer for all of his hard work, time and energy he has committed to the girls program over the years. Coach Schaeffer will continue to be a valuable member of our teaching/coaching staff."

Schaeffer just completed his fifth year as Bison girls head coach and 16th season as a coach overall. He has a career record of 130-202. Schaeffer's record at MHS is 37-86.

The Bison girls lost to Grand Island Northwest 52-28 in the quarterfinals of Class B-5 district tournament on March 12.

Schaeffer will retain his position as business education instructor, Nichols said.

Schaeffer was assisted by Robin Henrichs, Tracey Fisher and Jon Graff this season.

Schaeffer coached volleyball, track and basketball at Culbertson High School before coming to McCook.

Schaeffer and his wife Darlene have two children. Seth is a senior at MHS and Morgan is a sophomore.

Nichols said the search for a girls basketball coach has begun immediately.

There is also an opening for a physical education instructor at McCook High School because of the resignation of Marc Kaminski.

Nichols said it might be ideal to have one person fill both openings.
