Feral cat facts
Dear Editor,
A few weeks ago, I wrote concerning feral cats in the neighborhood of East E and East 5th Streets.
I was dismayed that someone was feeding these strays. The individual who is feeding them has changed locations and now is spreading cat food on the northeast corner of East E and East 5th Streets in front of the Rayburn Building.
I decided to do a little checking on things like McCook City Ordinances and viewed a few web sites concerning this issue.
Readers may want to go to the following links:
The Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon www.feralcats.com
The Humane Society of the United States www.hsus.org/pets/issues_affecting_our_pets/feral_cats/
Nebraska Humane Society www.nehumanesociety.org
It should be noted that those residents feeding feral cats are probably doing so out of love for these poor stray animals. Those of us that do not want our city over run with unclaimed cats, are also moved by love to keep their numbers at bay.
So, what can we do?
There are programs around the country that serve to Trap-Neuter-Return cats to their former areas in towns.
Some vets offer free neutering services for a given month of the year, which definitely helps keep everyone happy.
I encourage fellow readers to share their thoughts on these matters in a Letter to the Editor.
Thank you.
