The McCook Bison football overpowered an undermanned Hastings squad 64-0 Friday night at Weiland Field.

Hastings had just 32 players suited up because of injuries and other reasons and McCook rolled up a 50-0 halftime lead.

McCook, ranked No. 1 in Nebraska Class B, improved to 5-0.

Hastings dropped to 1-4.

McCook scored 28 points in the first 7 minutes of the first quarter.

Senior quarterback Matt Berry threw a 54-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Dillon Goltl and scored on TD runs of 7 and 37 yards.

Fullback Chris Schleeman added a 6-yard TD run.

McCook scored 22 points in the second quarter.

Berry scored from 5 yards out, Jeff Lorentz kicked a 22-yard field goal and Andy Smith scored from 18 yards out and Berry returned a punt 51 yards for a touchdown.

Smith added a 8-yard TD in the third quarter. Third-string quarterback Chad Stull capped the scoring with a 37-yard TD run.

In addition to his field goal, Lorentz made 5-of-6 extra points. Shane Wallen added two PAT kicks.

McCook, which has outscored opponents 266-20 this season, rolled up 12 first downs, 333 yards rushing and 100 yard passing.

The Bison defense limited the Tigers to three first downs, 37 yards rushing and 4 yards passing.

Eleven Bison players carried the football. Smith led the Bison in rushing with 108 yards, followed by Berry with 93, Stull 58 and Deon Allen 25.

Zach Wieser and Schleeman, who both rushed for 100 yards last week against Scottsbluff, were used sparingly and rushed for 10 and 6 yards against Hastings.

Berry completed 3-of-4 passes for 75 yards. Wieser caught a pass for 15 yards and Grabowski added a 6-yarder. Grabowski completed 1 pass for 25 yards to Wallen.

Grabowski and Wieser intercepted passes. Wieser recovered a fumble.

Andy Butler led Hastings in rushing with 21 yards on 8 carries.

"We physically played very well," said McCook coach Jeff Gross. "Mentally we cleared things up. We didn't have any alignment issues.

"We had a few too many penalties in the first half. We weren't trying to score a lot, but we had guys who ran hard."

Gross said 68 of the 72 McCook players on the roster played in the game.

McCook plays at Gering next week.

Kickoff is 8 p.m. central time/7 p.m. mountain time.

  • Whoa! Great Playing guys. We weren't anywhere near this good 52 years ago, good-yes, this good-no. Be proud, but not reckless.
