Swimmers take big meet in stride

HASTINGS -- McCook YMCA swimmers didn't seem intimidated by their final meet of the 2007-08 winter swim season, a number placing near the top of their age group.

The team joined more than 300 swimmers from Omaha, Columbus, Grand Island, Fremont, Beatrice, Lincoln, Hastings, Blair at Hastings for the Swim League Championship Meet on Saturday.


"This meet can be overwhelming for some swimmers, especially for the kids new to our program. Our kids seemed to take it all in stride and swim their race," said McCook coach Tracy Flaska.
Several swimmers placed in the top 8 in their age groups.

Those individuals include: Albany McDonald, Shayne Coleman, Becca Tietz, Morgan
Rodgers, Ana Miller, Jakobi Blau, Jamie Soderlund, Jessica Premer, Kimberly Kness, Andrew Graff, Nicky McDonald, Keagen Blau, Erik Graff, Alex Graff, Stephen Hoffman and Mitch Collicott.


Many swimmers posted their best times of the season.
Those bettering their times by 10 seconds or more were Albany McDonald in the 100 yard freestyle, Candace Coleman in the 50 yard freestyle, Jean Soderlund and Ana Miller in the 25 yard butterfly, and Anna Graff in the 200 yard freestyle. Some improved their times by up to 10 seconds.

This includes Jean Soderlund, Candace Coleman, and Kerrigan Burns in the 25 yard freestyle; Shayne Coleman, and Andersen Gillespie in the 50 yard
freestyle; Morgan Rodgers, Candace Coleman, Jean Soderlund in the 25 yard backstroke; Kyleana Blau in the 25 yard breaststroke; Olivia Chvatal in
the 50 yard freestyle; Haylee Gray in the 50 yard backstroke; Kelsey Schwab in the 50 yard breaststroke; Jakobi Blau and Kristen Burns in the
50 yard butterfly; Taylor Geisler, Courtney Steer, Lexis Jones in the 50 yard freestyle; Courtney Steer and Lexis Jones in the 100 yard freestyle;
Jamie Soderlund and Jessica Premer in the 50 yard backstroke; Lexis Jones in the 50 yard breaststroke; Taylor Geisler in the 50 yard butterfly; Kimberly Kness in the 50 yard freestyle, the 100 yard freestyle and the 100 yard backstroke; Erik Graff in the 25 yard freestyle; Andrew Graff in
the 25 yard backstroke and the 100 yard freestyle; Nicky McDonald in the 100 yard IM; Keagen Blau and Stephen Hoffman in the 50 yard freestyle; Alex Graff in the 100 yard freestyle; Keagen Blau and Stephen Hoffman in the 50 yard backstroke; Stephen Hoffman in the 50 yard breaststroke; Sam
Backer in the 50 yard butterfly; and Mitch Collicott in the 100 yard freestyle.

"The list of those improving their times is incredible. I am thrilled with how the kids performed," Flaska said.
This wraps up the winter season for the swim team. They will start up again in May for the summer league. Anyone interested may contact Tracy
