83 & Q Street dangers

Thursday, February 28, 2008

Dear Editor,

The powers that be must do something about the traffic hazard at West Q St. and highway 83 before there is a fatality there.

Last Saturday, I was almost run into, for the umpteenth time, by a motorist driving left of center, which is illegal. The southbound turning lane for Q Street is NOT a turning lane for northbound motorists to get into Orscheln's as many motorists believe. They should READ their Nebraska driver's manual as to what a double yellow line is for. It says "Double solid yellow lines mark the center of the road and separates oncoming traffic." As I live on Q Street, I frequently use this southbound turning lane to get home and I don't like someone coming at me head-on. I have seen drivers get in the center lane in front of Public Power, drive down that until they come to the left turn lane, go right across the intersection, (illegal), into the south-bound turning lane for Q Street. Law enforcement should set out there and issue citations for driving left of center. Maybe that would educate people as to the legal and safe way to enter Orscheln's but that is not going to happen. Instead, let me offer a solution that would be easy and economical. Simply move the entrance to Orscheln's to the road south of their property. That would be much safer and easier for motorists to understand.

Sincerely,

Jess Cain
