Telephone taxes
Dear Editor,
I was reading the lead article in the Feb. 23 issue of the Gazette about the good job the city government was doing collecting tax money to run the city operations, and a nice surplus.
Then, I noted there were thoughts about creating new ways of getting more money, and the thought of increasing the tax on cell phones.
The phone business probably has the highest tax already of anything I can think of; it is about 20 percent. Now some of it is mandated charges, which are taxes with a designated use, they call it mandated.
I was surprised the city manager was in favor of of it, with the only state reason, that other big cities were doing it. Also, I did not know that a CPA's job included urging city governments to increase the tax burden on the people.
