If the shoe fits ...

Thursday, August 30, 2007

Dear Editor,

I really need to get this out to whomever will listen to this dangerous situation.

And, you wonder, what that might be. I have lived in this community on and off since 1969. McCook has been my home (where) I thought I could feel safe, and I don't feel that way. I have been abused in many ways, and have turned to the police each time, and was basically denied protection.

Here recently, I have been talking to women in our community about physical, mental, emotional and verbal abuse.

Each woman I have talked to and shared (her) story with me that when police have been called and if a woman fights back to try and protect themselves and or their children they get told, if you press charges against the abuser, the police asked, "did you say anything or act out" and the woman says "Yes, I fought back," then the police say "I can give you a ticket as well."

What are women supposed to do their own safety and well-being. What is going to be done about this, folks? We are not living in the 1800s anymore. Last time I checked, this was 2007.

Now keep in mind, I'm not pointing any fingers in particular, but if the shoe fits, wear it. Thanks for letting me get this out.

Cheryl Larreau,

McCook
