Planners advance dog kennel proposal

Thursday, June 14, 2007

Despite objections from a nearby property owner, the McCook Planning Commission approved the request Monday night for a dog kennel to be placed about two miles outside of city limits.

Daniel and Lizann Miller, 71363 Road 385, sought a special exception from the Commission to place a 10 by 20 foot dog kennel on their property, zoned Agricultural. The Miller's, who have 30 dogs, plan to use the kennel to breed and board small dogs, such as Pomeranians.

Renae Williams, who lives east of the property, told commission members she had concerns about the proposed kennel, specifically about barking heard on the property that has become louder recently.

The owners, who live on the property, said that they have more dogs than they originally had planned but that the kennel would be situated so that the dogs couldn't see movement of people or vehicles.

They said noise should be minimal as the kennel will be between a metal quonset and metal shed and also be screened by a proposed seven-foot high fence.

After some discussion, Commission members voted to approve the request with the limitation that the kennel be used for just breeding purposes instead breeding and boarding.

The special request will now go before the McCook City Council for its approval.
