Another top production for SWNCTA

Monday, March 19, 2007

It was another remarkable effort by Southwest Nebraska Community Theater Association, as Cole Porter's "Anything Goes" took the stage Friday and Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

An attorney (Maury Green) as a mobster and an elementary school principal (Kathy Latta) as what one reviewer called a "trollop" are typical of the humorous irony possible in community theater production, and both of them played it to the hilt. There was an impressive array of new talent and long-time troupers, and the set met the new, high standards established by recent community theater productions.

New this time, thanks to the tutoring and participation of Robin Marks, was at least one full-blown tap dance number.

Community theater productions are a great way to bring people together, and allow hidden talents to come forth for others' enjoyment.

They're a great way for people who have never been involved in theater to expand their personal experiences, or revive long-dormant interests.

One can only speculate, among the "more experienced" cast members, what might have been the result had such singing or acting talents been discovered earlier.

That's the goal of today's auditions for the Missoula Children's Theatre's original adaptation of "The Little Mermaid," going on from 4 to 6 p.m. at the McCook Junior High Cafeteria.

Supported locally by the Southwest Nebraska Community Theater Association and McCook High School Thespian Troupe 2157, the young actors will rehearse throughout the week from 4 to 8:30 p.m. each day, and present the show Saturday at the McCook High School auditorium.

We know it's a sacrifice for the community and high school theater groups to support the Missoula Children's Theatre production.

But we also know that it's an investment that will pay entertainment dividends for decades to come.
