BENKELMAN -- Craig Richard Nelms, of Benkelman, died Monday (Feb. 26, 2007) near Greenwood, at the age of 22.

He was born Feb. 12, 1985, at North Platte to Dann E. and Sue Ann (Hayes) Nelms, and later moved with his family to Benkelman.

Craig was a member of the graduating class of 2003, at Dundy County High School.  He enjoyed being active in 4-H, FFA cattle projects, and had shown cattle at the Nebraska and Kansas State Fairs.  He obtained his State and American Degrees in FFA and was a two-time state qualifier in wrestling.  Craig was also involved in football, wrestling, and the Quiz Bowl.  He was an Honor Student and a member of the National Honor Society.

In 1999, Craig was confirmed into the United Methodist Church.  He was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Benkelman, and the United Methodist Youth Fellowship.  He enjoyed spending time with family and friends; talking; playing a good round of Pitch, and making sure no one could out bid him!At the time of his passing, Craig was attending the University of Nebraska Lincoln where he was pursuing a major in Plant Science and a minor in Ag Business.

He is survived by his parents, Dann and Sue Nelms of Benkelman; brother, Brent Nelms and fiancé, Melissa Nelson of Lincoln; sisters, Kelli Nelms of Lincoln, Julie Nelms and Laura Nelms of Benkelman; brother, Mark Nelms of Benkelman; grandparents, Don and Shirley Nelms of McCook, Dick and Yvonna Hayes of Cambridge; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, and many friends.

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. (MST) at the United Methodist Church in Benkelman, with Rev. Brian Fong officiating.  Interment will follow services at the Benkelman Cemetery.

There will be no viewing or visitation. The casket will remain closed.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.forch.com.
