More bang for the buck

Thursday, January 25, 2007

Dear Editor,

Resources are limited, so the same space, water and fertilizer that grows one ear of corn can also grow a pepper plant and in return produce 6 large bell peppers -- one ear of corn at 10 cents or 6 peppers at over 50 cents each.

One more time -- the same space that grows 10 cents worth of corn, can grow $3 worth of peppers.

Of course there are many examples; some of the herbs for tea and medicine run into the hundreds of dollars a pound. The biggest lie is we can't do it here.

If one percent of the people in the area are going to use 60 percent of the water and land, I would hope they would at least consider getting the most bang for the buck.
