MCC squads win big at Chief Motel Classic

The McCook Community College men's and women's basketball teams rolled to victories Friday night on the first night of the Chief Motel/Country Kitchen Classic at True Hall Gymnasium.

The MCC Indians' men team blasted the York College junior varsity 99-53 and improved to 4-7.

The MCC women blasted the Brown Mackie College-Salina (Kan.) Lions 77-40 and improved to 4-6.

The York Panther men's JV team had just six players, and the Indians led 60-31 at halftime.

Fourteen MCC players scored in the game, led by Shea Scarlett and Christian Lewis with 13 points each.

Trey Harris, Jeremy Mallard and Mark Versen each scored 9 points, Clint Napoleon 8, Manne Cook 7, Noel Cardinelli 7, Kyle Wamsley 7, Jamelle Reeves 5, McCook freshman Joel Arterburn 4, Sterling Link 4, McCook sophomore Brian Gaston 2 and Nate Lark 2.

Link and Lark each grabbed 6 rebounds. Reeves had 7 assists, Scarlett 5 and Harris 5. Lewis had 3 steals.

MCC hit 12-of-26 from 3-point range and outrebounded the Panthers 50-26.

The MCC women led 35-21 at halftime and outscored the Lions 42-19 in the second half. MCC hit eight 3-pointers.

Kamillia Brown, a 5-foot-5 sophomore guard from Kansas City, Mo., and a University of Nebraska-Omaha signee, scored 24 points to lead the Indians and all scorers.

Laken Cook, a 5-3 freshman from Trenton and Hitchcock County High School, poured in 10 points. She knocked down a pair of 3-pointers.

Kendra Knight scored 8 points, Cambridge sophomore Staci Moore 6, Heaven Johnson 6, Amanda Terpstra 6, Medicine Valley alum Kyle-Lynn Hughes 5, Sarah Hector 4 and Bridgette Riddick 2.

Hector and Johnson each grabbed 6 rebounds. Brown had 5 assists and 4 steals.

"We played a lot better tonight offensively," said MCC women's coach Michelle Orton. "In the second half, our defense got us going. The freshmen stepped up and played well."

Tourney schedule

The MCC men will play the Hastings College JV at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The MCC women will play Doane College JV at 4 p.m.

The Otero Junior College men will play the York JV at 2 p.m. Saturday.
