Water decisions

Tuesday, June 13, 2006

Dear Editor,

I read with interest the SPOTLIGHT ON CULBERTSON concerning their water solution. The article states "while other communities had difficulty solving their water problems, Culbertson was one of the first towns in this area to take action. With the help of Miller & Associates, the village located a safe and sufficient supply of water north of town."

Right after the McCook Council voted not to go north for their water, a meeting was held at W Design Associates with the following people present: Greg Wolford, John Bingham, Jerda Garey, Gene Morris, Richard Bair, Jack Lytle and myself.

The purpose of the meeting was to make a determination where we would now test. Because of a map I had previously given to the council, it was determined that I would work up another map with my recommendation of where they should test. One of the priority areas that was recommended was the Roger Goltl land that joins the Wagner land north of Culbertson.

Roger had told three of us that he would cooperate with the City of McCook if they wanted to do some testing. This information was passed on to John Bingham, Greg Wolford and some of the Council.

No one from the city ever contacted Roger to get permission to test drill on his property. Before the Council approved the bids on a treatment plant, they should all have known Culbertson had good water. I know from talking to Phil Lyons, he was set on putting in a treatment plant. Except for the site where they did drill the new well, my recommendations was virtually ignored. More testing should have been done.

I know this sounds like a bunch of sour grapes, but I would suggest that when we go to the polls in November, we remember who was serving at that time and we vote to replace them.

We need some good people to come forth and submit their name as a write-in for council.

Keith L. Arterburn
