Send council members a bill

Monday, May 8, 2006

Dear Editor,

We hope that our City Council will reject the generous offer and check presented by Bill Bauer on behalf of the McCook Gun Club. It was rather rude to question this most generous gesture by commenting on the check not being certified. The McCook Gun Club is not responsible for the costly and poor decisions that have been made by some of our City Council members.

The fair way to pay this hefty severance amount would be to divide the among amongst the council members who voted to re-hire.

As citizens, we are used to paying for these high-dollar mistakes, but this is just a drop in the bucket compared to the air base fiasco. I think we need to just pay this out of the city budget and move on and hope it was a lesson learned.

It's a little disappointing to see the few choices we have in the fall election in regard to council members. We definitely need to get more council members like Aaron Kircher who we feel is the voice of the people. Unfortunately, some past and present council members have helped make this an undesirable public service position.

We want to thank all the people who have called into Open Line, written Open Forum letters and attended the council meetings. McCook is a great community and we have a lot of citizens who really care about our city and, in the end, the majority of the City Council did the right thing and listened and acted in response to the voice of the citizens.

Just a thought, but maybe we could get a cross-section of McCook residents on a phone list and they could be polled (like the Gallup Poll does) before the council makes any big decisions in the future.

Remember to vote, because every vote does count. Hopefully by the November election, we will have some more candidates come forward as write-in votes, possibly.

Anna Marie Stetzel,

Marty Guthrie,

Sheila Berls
