Wilmot: Smear campaign shows she's on right track

Friday, May 5, 2006

BEAVER CITY -- District 44 legislative candidate says a postcard received throughout the district on Friday is part of a smear campaign that proves she's on the right track.

The cards, paid for by the "Nebraska Voter Education Project" of Lincoln, quoted from a March 9, 2006, letter from the Nebraska Department of Education.

The letter indicated that Wilmot, a former state board of education member, had turned in a computer docking station, monitor and printer, but not a laptop computer.

"I recently received notification a laptop was not among the items I returned to the state department of education in early 2003," Wilmot told the McCook Daily Gazette late Friday.

"It was brought to my attention and that misunderstanding was cleared up within nine days of the notification," she said.

"The card being received in the mail today indicating that the computer has not been returned to the Department of Education is incorrect," Wilmot said.

"And, given the fact that the election is Tuesday, and there is no time for me to respond it's obvious to me that the sender knew this smear tactic would not hold up under a rebuttal of facts."

After quoting the March 9 letter, the card reads, "Kathy Wilmot served two terms on the State Board of Education, but it looks like she took home more than just the experience of serving as a board member. Is this the kind of person we want representing us in the Nebraska Legislature? When you vote on May 9, make sure you know Kathy Wilmot's true colors."

Wilmot responded, "Knowing that an organization with such a lack of character would put this type of effort into smearing our campaign, really assures me that I am on the right track when I say that I am working to bring local control to voters and to target wasteful spending of our tax dollars. My true colors are red, white and blue, and I feel that this organization's colors are so dark, I really can't tell what their colors are."
