Fabrizius flies; Koch conquers; Wagner and Wimer win; Pollmann pulls ahead at McCook Speedway Friday night

Tuesday, May 2, 2006
Bruce Crosby/McCook Daily Gazette Competitors in the stock car division race Friday night at McCook Speedway as the sun sets in the west behind them. Aaron Koch of Cambridge won the stock car A feature race. The next event in Southwest Nebraska will be at Culbertson Speedway at 8 p.m. Friday. McCook Speedway will be in action next on May 12, also at 8 p.m.

The air was a little chilly Friday night at McCook Speedway, but the racing was hot as 75 drivers came to compete in the five classes.

John Fabrizius of Colby, Brady Koch of Cambridge, Justin Wagner of Culbertson and Max Pollmann and Dave Wimer of Trenton drove hot en route to A Feature victories.

Eighteen cars started the IMCA Modified A Feature, led early by North Platte's Ronnie Wallace.

After the first caution, heat winner John Fabrizius found a way by Wallace and pulled out to a healthy lead, leaving Wallace to battle for second place with Don Hagan Jr. of Culbertson.

With six laps to go, the race was stopped after Kyle Clough of Wallace rolled off of corner one.

When action resumed, Wallace mounted a charge that Fabrizius put down and drove away for his first McCook Speedway A Feature win. At the finish line, David Murray Jr. of Oberlin, got by Wallace for second place. Hagan finished fourth while Nick Tubbs of Colby, rounded out the top five.

The other IMCA Modified heat races were taken by Darren Pollmann of McCook and Charley Brown of Maxwell.

The first four laps of the IMCA Stock Car A Feature had four different drivers take the lead.

Jeremy Halouska of North Platte handed the lead over on lap two to Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, who lost it to heat winner Jason Davis of Norton, who gave it up to Brady Koch.

That was about the time it was really getting crazy in the race and an eight car pileup ensued in corner one.

After the mess was cleaned up, Koch became the man to beat. He was challenged by Davis and heat winners Todd Chrisman of North Platte and Caleb Peters of Oberlin Davis started to get underneath Koch when the final caution came out with four laps to go.

Koch was more protective of the bottom after the restart and held on for the win.

Chrisman was able to get by Davis for second. Peters finished in fourth place, ahead of Cory Struckhoff of Kensington.

The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature had a caution on lap ten of their twenty lap race, but otherwise had a pretty clean race.

Heat race victor Aaron Koch of Cambridge skipped out of prom decorating to race and at the start of the race, looked as though it might pay off. That was before he hit the slower traffic and that allowed Justin Wagner to first catch him, then sneak by for the lead.

Jim Buss of Hastings moved from row six to the third place in only three laps, but got by Koch after the restart. Heat winner Buss tried, but could not close the gap on Wagner, even when Wagner came on lapped traffic.

Jason Koch of Cambridge got by brother Aaron late to finish in third place. Wade Wagenblast of Deshler finished fifth. The other IMCA Hobby Stock heat race was taken by Austin Davis of Benkelman.

Max Pollmann has not driven a Classic Modified for a full year, but on Friday night, he earned his second career win.

He took the lead at the start of the A Feature, hit his marks and finished ahead of his uncle Larry Pollmann of McCook by a healthy margin.

Jay Alberts of McCook, a heat winner, started and finished the race in third place, ahead of Duke Ebert of Culbertson and heat winner Devin Allen of Cambridge.

The Mini-Trucks had a caution-free feature, but they put on a show.

Zach Olmstead of Overton had the lead at the start of the race and garnered a fair lead.

David Wimer and heat winner Leeland Bieker of McCook started near the back of the field and raced each other side-by-side as they passed their way to Olmstead.

On lap seven, Wimer chose the right path and got by the Overton driver for the lead. Bieker was not too far behind, but far enough behind to not shake Wimer from the lead.

Zach did hold on for his best ever third place finish. Cindy Murray of Oberlin, was right behind him and just ahead of Zach's brother Jake Olmstead to take fourth place.

Sara Murray of Oberlin, won the other Mini-Truck heat race.

The next event in Southwest Nebraska will be at Culbertson Speedway at 8 p.m. Friday.

McCook Speedway will be in action next on May 12, also at 8 p.m.
