Snow snafu?

Wednesday, March 29, 2006

Dear Editor,

This is in response to the article in the Tuesday, March 21, 2006, edition.

The article had quotes from Public Works Director Kyle Potthoff on the performance of the city crews in the clearing of snow from the city streets.

I don't know if he has ever been to another town or city after a snow storm, but I strongly disagree with his comments on the performance of the city crews on how they did such an outstanding job of clearing the streets of snow.

I have lived in towns and cities both larger and smaller than McCook and have never seen such a poor job of snow removal from the streets.

With as many vehicles as Mr. Potthoff stated that were working, I would have thought that they would have done a much better job of clearing snow from the streets.

I took a drive around the city and noticed that most residential streets had not even had a path cleared down the middle, but most of the streets in the part of the city called the "Reservation" had been cleared curb-to-curb.

Mr. Potthoff also stated that the snow routes had been cleared.

I drive down J Street daily and it had a lot of snow and ice on it until Thursday afternoon when the sun came out and melted it off.

Mr. Potthoff stated that there, the streets had been lightly graveled and salted. When I was driving around, I did not notice any streets that had any gravel or salt on them, as most of the residential streets were a solid sheet of ice.

I hope he re-evaluates his statements on the performance of how he thought the job of clearing the streets was done. That way, if we ever get another snow storm again, they will attempt to do a better job of snow removal.

Respectfully,

Clair Hanson,

McCook
