Latest show raises the bar once again

Saturday, March 18, 2006

If you don't have tickets for Saturday night's production of The Sound of Music, you'd better hurry. Then again, it might already be too late, and you'll have to try for Sunday afternoon.

Either way, the latest Southwest Nebraska Community Theatre production, by all accounts, is a show that can't be missed.

We thought nothing could possibly beat the group's production of "Fiddler on the Roof," but from what we hear, the latest show rises to that level or higher.

From the time the curtains open, revealing beautiful sets, through the introduction of the characters, the love story and escape from the Nazis, the audience needs to be ready for laughter and tears.

A couple of audience members who saw Thursday night's production gave it rave reviews.

The gorgeous sets appeared to be professional-quality, and the a capella performance by the Chorus of Nuns is unforgettable, one staffer said. Sound is also pro-quality and another attendee said the show could hold its own or best community theater or college productions in cities like Denver or Kansas City.

But we shouldn't be surprised.

Music lovers around the McCook area recognize "Maria" Jeri Lynn Karr as a perennial star and will enjoy Greg Hepp's reappearance in a lead role as "Capt. Von Trapp."

And, anyone who has been involved in a production led by director Christy Stevens knows that the show will bring out the best possible performances by each of the actors and musicians.

But it is perhaps the supporting actors who put the sharp edge on the "Sound of Music," or as one audience member said, "The kids are the ones who really make the show."

So to members of the Southwest Nebraska Community Theater Association and their families, thanks for another great contribution to the cultural life of our area.

And to those who haven't yet made plans to attend The Sound of Music, why not?

It's on stage 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the McCook High School Auditorium.
