Letter to the Editor

Sorry Rush is back

Thursday, March 2, 2006

Dear Editor,

Some of my best friends are Limbaugh addicts ("dittoheads"). You don't always agree with all your friends, right? I personally am sad to hear Rush is coming back to McCook airwaves. I fear he will undermine habits of good citizenship, and will damage families and spiritual lives.

Unfortunately, he behaves like what Isaiah calls a "scoundrel." "The scoundrel ... makes up evil schemes to destroy the poor with lies, even when the plea of the needy is just." (Isaiah 32) Of "six things the LORD hates" this man qualifies on at least four - "haughty eyes, a lying tongue ... a false witness ... and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers." (Proverbs 6)

I predict Rush's voice in McCook will only encourage any tendencies there already may be to self-centeredness, hot temper, self-righteousness, persistent anger, and dangerous misinformation in our area. We really don't need that.

I wonder why churches don't speak up. They freely take stands that apply to "other people" or to situations far away -- but nary a peep about this. It seems obvious to me that we should resist such a corrupt and corrupting influence.

One reason people give for listening to Rush is that he has the courage to express allegedly unpopular opinions. So I guess, if they practice what they preach, my dittohead friends will continue to welcome my unpopular opinions about this particular scoundrel. For that courtesy I thank them.

Larry Harvey,

McCook
