Seeking old shipmate

Wednesday, December 14, 2005

Dear Editor,

I'm trying to re-establish contact with a former shipmate friend of mine from McCook by the name of William ("Bill") Brainard. Bill and I served in the U.S. Navy aboard the same ship, the USS FLORIKAN (ASR-9), a submarine rescue vessel from 1951 until 1954 during the Korean War and our home port was in San Diego.

I attended Bill's wedding during that time in California. During the time that I knew Bill we were in our early 20s and now I'm 74. I lost contact with Bill after the Korean War and we both go discharged from the Navy; however, for a few years I believe we exchanged Christmas cards and I think he was living on the West Coast.

I was from Florida then and still am. I understand that McCook is a small town and I wondered if you could look in the McCook phone book and see if there are still any Brainards that live there and if so, call what few there might be, if any, and see if they know of Bill or maybe put something in your Gazette newspaper in the way of "Looking for Bill Brainard."

I believe that Bill graduated from High School there, probably in 1949 or 1950.

Thank you for any help that you can give me on this.

Sincerely,

Ted Trousdale,
