Letter to the Editor

A week of loss

Tuesday, November 8, 2005

Dear Editor,

As a former resident of McCook (I grew up there), this week has been one of deep loss for all of us.

The John T. Harris Family was my second family when I was growing up. I probably spent more time at their home than I did at my own! Besides keeping me busy at numerous jobs (and there were MANY!), John T. (Mr. Harris to me) always kept his door open, even as I got older.

My wife, children and I appeared at his farm in Opelika, Ala., and he said, "Well, just hook up your RV right ther' and I'll go git a cord for electricity."

I had spent time on the farm as a child, and I really felt at home. He was that kind of man.

Just today I learned of Dal Wood's death. What a wealth of knowledge he had! He also had the Republican humor to keep both my dad and brother in line for all these years! I had the privilege of sharing time with him on my return visits to McCook and those "discussions" in the law office will be missed!

As I mourn their passing, I (as I hope you) feel proud to have known that they were part of our community.

Respectfully,

William W. Lyons III, M.D.
