Ross responds to cartoon

Friday, October 7, 2005

Dear Editor,

Since the recent publication of an editorial cartoon about the State Treasurer's race that was syndicated from the Hastings Tribune, I've been contacted by many supporters who saw it and believed it to be a very deliberate attack on my character.

After speaking with Darren Fowler, the Managing Editor of the Hastings Tribune, I've been assured that the artist intended the satirical jabs in the cartoon for my predecessor, Lorelee Bryd and not for me. Unfortunately many misunderstood the cartoon. I must set the record straight.

In the cartoon a caricature of me wearing a "Ross" name badge is asked about qualifications for the office and responds with one line: "I haven't been arrested since being appointed." Many interpret that as being an implication that I was arrested before being appointed. I have never been arrested! I do possess qualifications worthy of mention. Prior to seven years in public service to the State of Nebraska, I owned and operated an extremely successful corporation dedicated to assisting Nebraska communities in filling their healthcare needs. Before that I was the CEO and administrator of a hospital following some time as the accountant/manager for a multi-dimensional corporation. So as you can see I have a record of achievement- not a criminal record.

Others believe the cartoon was trying to portray a criminal link between me and my predecessor, Lorelee Bryd; that I am carrying on with illegal activities in the State Treasurer's office. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I have thoroughly "cleaned house" in that office, restoring public trust and efficiency. In fact, my team and I have reached unprecedented levels of success in all of our programs.

I appreciate the cooperation and fairness of this newspaper in clarifying this. I abhor negative campaigning and personal attacks but I'm always glad to answer any questions about my record in government or business. Let us all hope that we can continue to have discussions that are about issues and presented in a fair and open way.

Ron Ross
