Two McCook men allegedly wrote more than $3,000 in stolen checks before being apprehended by the McCook Police Department on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

James L. Sanford and Kyle L. Wayman, both 18, were arraigned in County Court Friday, Sept. 23 on forgery and burglary counts.

According to court re-cords, a house sitter for Lewis and Betty Harmon notified police on Sept. 18 that the front door of the Harmon residence was unlocked, and that she found a duplicate copy of a check laying on the staircase. She also said that a filing cabinet door was left open. Shortly afterwards, a local bank notified the McCook Police of unusual check activity on the Harmon account.

Items allegedly purchased at local businesses by Sanford and Wayman between early Sept. and Sept. 21 included video games and a leather video chair, a computer printer, a cell phone, shoes, and a scooter. A total of $3,726.12 was spent in stolen checks.

Wayman was charged with one count of burglary and nine counts of forgery, with Sanford being charged with one count of burglary and seven counts of forgery. Bond was set for each at $25,000, and sentencing scheduled for Oct. 6 at 3 p.m.
