Great pitching and defense backed up by solid offense is what head coach Steve Cochran got out of his players Sunday afternoon at the Jaycees Sports Complex.

After the First Central Bank American Legion Juniors lost a two-run game at Lexington, they blazed back with fury during their final regular season home game.

The Juniors slashed Lexington 13-2 in five innings during the very windy matchup.

"I told the team before the game that I wanted a big win and they really brought it," Cochran said.

Lance Korte was on the mound for the Juniors as he only allowed Lexington to cross the plate twice.

"Lance did a terrific job for us. I gave him a bad time about not getting ahead in the count, because my blood pressure started to get a little high there at the beginning of the game," Cochran said.

"The defense really backed him up. They only had a couple errors which was bound to happen, but the offense really stuck out to me."

Dillon Goltl led the Juniors at the plate by going 3 for 4.

They also had a surplus of hits coming from Andrew Reitz, Ryan Eder and Colton Cochran as they each hit two apiece.

According to Cochran, his team is playing just like he had hoped they would at this point in the season.

"This is exactly where I had planned to be getting ready to go into the district tournament. I hope they will continue to roll through their next few games," Cochran said.

The First Central Bank American Legion Juniors (11-23) and the Seniors will travel to North Platte on Tuesday night.

The games are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

These will be the last games of the regular season for the Juniors and Seniors.

H Juniors split twinbill against Hays -- The First Central Bank American Legion Juniors finally broke out of their losing skid on Saturday as they split a pair of games with Hays at the Jaycees Sports Complex.

McCook fell in game one 12-4, but came back and edged out the Kansas team 4-3.

In game one, the Juniors were in the game up until the sixth inning. They kept the run spread under five runs the whole game up until this time.

Hays filled the sacks on a few big hits and walks and tore the game open in the sixth and seventh innings.

"The guys played exactly the way that I wanted them to. They are doing everything that they should do. The defense and offense both showed up and I knew it could be one of those games where it could go either way," head coach Steve Cochran said.

Pitcher Ryan Eder did what we could to keep the hard-hitting Hays team off balance.

"Every game Ryan throws he gives 110 percent and the defense and offense know that when he is on the mound, they have a chance to win the game," Cochran said.

Eder led the team at the plate as well, by having another multi-hit game.

"The defense is doing what they need to do to win some games. We just need to get the offense fired up a little bit," Cochran said.

During the second game of the day, the FCB Juniors broke out of their slump. Sam Frazier controlled the game on the mound and showed his dominance as McCook sealed the game by one run.

"Sam threw an awesome game. He just picked it up and went with it and ended up with a win when it was all said and done," Cochran said.

At the plate, Lucas Kotschwar drove a big double into the gap to start off the sixth inning.

His run ended up being the winning one as the pitching staff blanked Hays in the top of the seventh.

"One of the things I wanted the guys to work for going into districts is to compete with Hays. They definitely did that on Saturday by getting one game off of a Kansas Class A club. Hopefully, things will keep rolling like this all the way through districts," Cochran said.
