Incident involved possible fake officer

Monday, April 4, 2005

ATWOOD -- The Rawlins County Sheriff's Department is investigating an incident in which a 16-year-old girl was taken from her vehicle by a man who looked like a uniformed officer. Undersheriff Jim Schroeder said this morning investigators are not releasing any information about a possible sexual assault.

Schroeder said the incident happened Sunday, March 27, between 8:30 p.m. and 11 p.m., about two miles south of the Kansas-Nebraska line on Kansas Highway 25.

Schroeder said the girl was stopped by a vehicle equipped with a rotating red light, and taken from her vehicle to the male suspect's vehicle, which Schroeder said she reports looked like a patrol car. The suspect wore what looked like a police uniform, Schroeder said.

Schroeder said the sheriff's office has no record of a vehicle stop at that time.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call the sheriff's office, (785) 626-3208.
