GRAND ISLAND -- The McCook boys basketball team traveled to Grand Island Friday night to face Grand Island Northwest for a possible no. 3 seed in the upcoming state sub districts.

Grand Island came out on top in a tight game 37-35.

McCook started off the game hot, putting up 19 first quarter points giving them a seven point lead.

McCook managed 8 second-half points, yet they still had a chance to win it at the end.

The Bison had a chance to hit two free throws for the lead with just seconds left in the game but missed both and lost the game by 2.

"We played a solid first half, but we knew going into halftime that we were holding a tiger by the tail, they have some good players that hit some big shots in the second half," said McCook coach Steve Nicholson.

"We missed some key free throws late, that we would normally make in practice and that I know we'll hit next time, overall we played hard."

Brendan Liess led the Bison in scoring with 16.
