Plenty of caps; not enough postage

Tuesday, January 18, 2005

The donations of ball caps for troops serving in Iraq has been so overwhelming, we have a favor to ask -- no more hats -- at least for now.

Gloria Masoner, who started the drive, estimates the Gazette has received at least 2,000 caps and several dozen pairs of socks.

"I never imagined the response would be this overwhelming," Masoner said. "Several people have brought in caps they've collected over the past 10 or 20 years."

Masoner had planned to pay to ship the ballcaps to troops overseas, but because of the overwhelming response, hopes to raise funds for shipping costs as well.

To that end, she will be hosting a chili feed for Gazette employees Thursday, Jan. 27, to begin collecting postage money.

"I've got to get this going," she said. "I think the boss would like to have his office back."

If anyone would like to donate to the ball cap campaign, please send them to Caps for Soldiers, c/o McCook Daily Gazette, PO Box 1268, McCook, NE 69001 or drop donations at the office at West First and E Street.
