Arapahoe's Braithwait lights up Elwood for seven 3-pointers

ELWOOD -- Helped out by a team shooting percentage advantage of 47 percent to 25 percent in the first half, Arapahoe rolled to a convincing 67-49 victory over the Elwood Pirates.

Arapahoe jumped all over Elwood from the opening tip, ending the first quarter with a 19-7 lead.

The Warriors continued to poundthe Pirates in the second quarter ending the first half with a dominant 42-18 advantage.

Arapahoe had three players in double figures, leading the way was Tony Braithwait who hit 7 of 12 from behind the arc for 21 points.

Close behind was Blake Maaske who contributed 19 points and 9 rebounds. Ryan Stagemeyer chipped in 11 points.

Elwood had two players in double figures. Leading them in scoring was Stephen schutz with 16 and Brandon Hinkle with 10.

Arapahoe hosts Dundy County Saturday.

BENKLEMAN -- Collin Lutz scored a game high 14 points to lead Dundy County past Medicine Valley 47-35 in Friday night boys basketball action in Benkleman.

Jordan Wilcox scored 13 to lead Medicine Valley and Josh Nutt added 10 points for the Raiders.

Dundy County, now 2-7 on the season, will play at Arapahoe on Saturday.

Medicine Valley will look for win number one at Maywood on Tuesday.

CAMBRIDGE -- Cambridge defeated Franklin, 75-35, in boys high school basketball play here Friday.

Waid Vontz pumped in 28 points to lead the winning Trojans. Anthony Lytle followed with 10 points.

Franklin was led by Jordy Slocum with 10 points.

Vontz and Brian Ballou each pulled down six rebounds for Cambridge.

Cambridge grabbed 21 rebounds, while Franklin got a hold of 26.

Cambridge travels to Hayes Center Saturday.

CAMBRIDGE -- Cambridge won in a tight fought game Friday night, besting the Franklin Flyers by only four points.

Cambridge had to fight its way back into the game as Frankling jumped out to a quick 17-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Cambridge was able to pull to within 1 by the time the game reached half time, ending the first half with Franklin ahead 24-23.

In the second half Cambridge was able to gain the lead in the fourth quarter and pulled out a 4-point win.

Lisa Minnick lead the Trojans in scoring and rebounds, scoring 14 points and adding 12 rebounds.

Cambridge had two other girls in double figure points: Staci Moore 10 and Andi Langley 11.

Paige Mazour poured in a team high 23 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort and was the only Flyer in double figures.

Cambridge travels to Hayes Center Saturday for its next game.

INDIANOLA -- Mason Nelms had 19 points and Jesse Randolph 17 to lead Southwest past Bertrand in Indianola on Friday.

Southwest led by just one at halftime, before going ahead by five after the third quarter.

Bertrand would outscore the Roughriders in the final period, but Southwest would hold on for the win.

Jordan Schwarz led Bertrand with 19 points.

Southwest improves to 6-6 and will travel to North Platte St. Pats on Saturday.

INDIANOLA -- Bertrand slipped past Southwest, 48-44, in girls basketball action here Friday night.

The score was knotted at 24 at half time. Scoring was even in all quarters except the third, when the Vikings outscored the Roughriders by four points for the winning difference.

Mandy Kuck lit the boards with 22 points to led Bertrand.

Savannah Noyes put 13 points through the hoop to pace Southwest.

The Vikings hit six of 18 free throws for 33 percent.

The Roughriders were 5-for-11 from the line for 45 percent.

Southwest, now 6-7, travels to North Platte St. Pat's Saturday.

OBERLIN -- Quinter came into Oberlin Friday night ready to pay some basketball, and showed it on the court, rolling to a big win over Oberlin.

After the game oberlin's coach Dick Ahlberg was quoted as saying, "Quinter has a solid team, and we just didn't play that well."

Oberlin was able to hang in through the first quarter ending the quarter in a 12 -12 tie.

Then in the second quarter Quinter started to pull away ending the first half with a 33 - 24 lead.

The second half didn't fair much better for Oberlin as the third quarter was dominated by Quinter.

The game ended with a Quinter 66 - 41 victory.

Teryn Grafel lead the Oberlin Red Devils in scoring with 13, the only other Red Devil in double digits was Jesse Juenemann who contributed 10.

Quinter had three players in double digits. As a team they outrebounded Oberlin 35-25. They also forced Oberlin into 25 turnovers.

Oberlin hosts the Oberlin invitational and faces off against Resurrection Christian in the first round January 20th.

OBERLIN -- Kaitlyn Stapp poured in 15 points as Oberlin pulled out a 20 point win over the Quinter Bulldogs.

Two other Red Devils ended up in double figures. Jamie Elwood had 12, and Lauren Fortin added 10.

Leading the Quinter Bulldogs was Jocelyn Anderson who finished with 13 points, and was the lone bulldog in double figures.

Next Tuesday, Oberlin hosts the Oberlin Invitational, and in the opening round draws Resurrection Christian.

ATWOOD -- Goodland slid past Rawlins County, 74-51, in boys basketball action here Friday night.

"It was a lot closer game than the score indicates," Rawlins County Coach Dave Leitner said. "We led at half time, but we got into foul trouble with our point guard in the fourth quarter."

Cedric Green led Atwood with 12 points. Teammate Ben Grafel followed with 10 points.

Goodland was led by Jance McKee with 18 points. Derrick Raymer added 13 points. Jafe Herl, Lane Winter and Brock Lohr each added 11 points.

"We played really well and with a lot of heart," Leitner said. "This team is going to get better."

Rawlins County, now 2-6, plays Cambridge in the Oberlin Tournament Tuesday.

Ariel Dunker put 15 points through the hoop to lead Rawlins Count.

Dani Bedore pumped in 21 points to lead Goodland. Justeen Koehler added 10 points.

Rawlins County hit 13 of 24 from the line for 54 percent.

Goodland tossed in 14 of 25 free throws for 56 percent

Rawlins County plays in the Oberlin Tournament Tuesday.

SOUTHERN VALLEY -- Southern Valley played host to Hastings St. Cecilia Friday night and walked away with a solid ten point victory.

The Eagles had to over come a slight Hastings St. Cecilia lead at halftime, they did so by holding the Bluehawks to four points in the third quarter and five in the fourth.

Southern Valley heald the Bluehawks to a mere second half team shooting percentage of 18 percent.

Southern Valley had two players reach double figure points. Mike Powell had 15 and Andrew Winscot had 12.

The Eagles' leading rebounder was Gaven Fults who pulled down five.

Hastings St. Cecilia had no players in double figures.

Southern Valley travels to Northern Valley Kansas, Saturday night for it's next contest.

OXFORD -- Hastings St. Cecilia rolled to a 65-46 win over Southern Valley in girls basketball play here Friday night.

Janae Perkins lead the Southern Valley Eagles with 12 points and eight rebounds. Teammate Megan Becker added 11 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Leading scorers for the Hawkettes were Jericho Johnson and Alyssa Farmer with 15 points each. Katie Hannon chipped in 10 points.

Southern Valley tossed in five of 17 free throws for 29 percent. Hastings St. Cecilia was 7-for-10 from the line.

Southern Valley travels to Northern Valley, Kan. Saturday.

The Hayes Center girls handed Brady a 68-38 drubbing Friday night at Brady.

Terra Bishop had 15 points for the Cardinals, followed by Mary Gohl with 12, Amy Cox and Randi Steele with 10 each.

Gohl led with 16 rebounds, Randi Still 10 and Kayla Bauer 7. Bauer also led in steals with 5.

"The girls played an aggressive offensive game," Hayes Center coach Krystal Sauser said.

"They were able to make quick passes and get some open shots. Defensively, we need to step our game up quite a bit. The girls set a goal of holdimg them to 25 and couldn't quite make it happen."

IMPERIAL -- The Chase County-Imperial girls basketball team used a 10-4 fourth quarter to pull away from Grant Thursday night at Imperial.

Whitney Paisley led the Longhorns with 10 points. Tabitha Russell and Nicole Longan scored 8 each, Amanda Poppe 7, Celeste Pankonin 6 and Sarah Miller 2.

"We played solid defense and created turnovers the entire game, especially the fourth quarter," said Chase County girls coach Marc Mroczek. "We scored in double digits every quarter which is outstanding. We had a lot of girls step up and play well."

The Longhorns will play at Gothenburg Tuesday.
